The free Field Mycologist app lets you record fungi in the field with your phone’s camera and GPS. It works with the same account as the website.
Downloading the App
- iPhone and iPad: download from the App Store
- Android: download from Google Play
Logging In or Signing Up
Log in with the email and password you use on the website. New to Field Mycologist UK? Tap the sign up link on the login screen. See Creating Your Account.
Permissions
The app asks for:
- Camera: to photograph your finds
- Photos: to choose photos you’ve already taken
- Location: to record where you are when you’re recording at the site
You can change these later in your phone’s settings. See App Privacy Settings.
Finding Your Way Around
The tab bar at the bottom has five tabs:
- Home: your observation and confirmed counts, recent activity, badges, Field Guides and a shortcut to the map. Identifiers also see a banner for disputed observations.
- Explore: a map of observations. See Viewing the Observation Map.
- Observe (the centre button): record a new observation.
- Browse: everyone’s observations, with a filter for all, confirmed or unconfirmed.
- Me: your observations and activity, with shortcuts to your favourites and Settings.
Setting Up
- Tap Me, then the cog icon.
- Choose your Default Location Privacy.
- Choose your Appearance: Light, Dark or System default.
- Turn on Log in with Face ID (or Touch ID or fingerprint) if you’d like.
Your First Observation
Tap the Observe button. See Recording Observations in the App.
Working With the Website
Everything is stored in your account, so observations, favourites and activity appear on the website and in the app. The app needs an internet connection to load and submit observations. If you have no signal in the field, take your photos and record the observation when you’re back online. The location and date are read from your photos.
