Understanding iNaturalist Geoprivacy

When you export to iNaturalist, you choose a location privacy setting just for iNaturalist. It’s completely separate from your Field Mycologist UK setting.

Independent Settings

  • An observation can be Open here but Obscured on iNaturalist, for example.
  • You choose the iNaturalist setting each time you export.
  • The one exception: Private observations here are always exported as Private.

iNaturalist’s Options

Open

Anyone on iNaturalist can see the exact location.

Obscured

iNaturalist shows a location randomly placed in a larger area, roughly 20km across. The true location is visible to you and to people you trust on iNaturalist.

Private

No location is shown to other iNaturalist users.

Why Separate Settings?

  • Different audiences: Field Mycologist UK is a UK recording community, while iNaturalist is global.
  • Different purposes: you may be happy for UK recorders to see the area, but prefer to hide it worldwide.

iNaturalist’s Automatic Obscuring

iNaturalist automatically obscures threatened species, whatever setting you choose.

Changing It After Export

  1. Open the observation on iNaturalist and click Edit.
  2. Change the geoprivacy and save.

Changes on iNaturalist don’t affect your Field Mycologist UK observation, and changes here don’t affect iNaturalist.
