Downloading Herbarium Labels

Create a printable herbarium label for a dried specimen. Each label includes the key details of your observation and a QR code linking to it on Field Mycologist UK.

What’s a Herbarium Label?

A herbarium label is kept with a dried specimen in a collection (a fungarium). It records the essential details, such as the species, collector, date and place, so the specimen stays useful for years to come.

Downloading a Label

  1. On the website, open your observation.
  2. Click Download Label, next to Edit Observation at the top of the page.
  3. A PDF label opens, ready to print or save.

Labels are available for your own observations.

What’s on the Label

  • The species name
  • The recorder: your name
  • A collection number: the observation’s reference number
  • The location you recorded
  • The date of the observation
  • Your notes
  • A QR code that opens the observation online

Printing

  • Print on white card, or on acid-free paper for a long-term collection.
  • Cut out the label and keep it with the specimen packet.

The QR Code

Scan the QR code with any phone camera to open the full observation, with all its photos and details. It’s handy for anyone looking at your collection later.

Tips

  • Download the label while you’re preparing the specimen, so the two never get separated.
  • Keep a copy of the PDF with your records.
  • The label shows the location you recorded, so think about who will see it if the species is rare.
