Editing Your Observations

You can update your own observations at any time on the website or in the app, including the species, photos and location.

Editing on the Website

Open your observation, for example from Your observations in the menu under your name.
Click Edit Observation at the top of the page.
Make your changes and click Update observation.

Species: search for a different fungus. See “Changing the species” below.
Date, habitat, substrate, associates, notes and how sure you are.
Location and location privacy. If your observation is obscured, it keeps the same approximate point when you save, unless you’ve moved it far enough that the old point no longer fits.
Photos: drag photos to reorder them (the first is the main image), delete a photo with its delete button, or use Add More Images to upload extra photos. An observation can have up to 7 photos.

If you change the species after other members have seen your observation:

Your original ID stays visible on the observation, crossed through, so the history makes sense to everyone.
A note is added to the activity feed recording the new ID.
Your new ID becomes your vote. Other members’ votes stay where they are, so agreements with your original ID still count. If your original ID is still clearly ahead it stays confirmed, and your edit won’t change the name shown. Otherwise the observation becomes Unconfirmed until one ID is clearly ahead. If you change it to a species someone has already suggested, it counts as accepting their suggestion.

Accepting someone’s suggestion changes the species in the same way. See Accepting an ID Suggestion.

Warning: Deleting can’t be undone. The observation, its photos and all comments and suggestions on it are removed.

You can only edit your own observations.
Changes aren’t sent to iNaturalist. If you’ve exported the observation, update it on iNaturalist too.
