Browsing the Fungi Database

The Fungi Index holds a page for every species that can be recorded on Field Mycologist UK. Browse it to learn species, or to help identify something you’ve found.

Opening the Fungi Index

Click Fungi in the main menu to open the Fungi Index. At the top you’ll see the Total Genera and Total Species in the database.

Browsing

Species are shown as cards with a photo, the scientific name and the common name where there is one. More species load as you scroll.

Filtering by Letter

Click a letter to show species whose scientific name starts with it. Click All to show everything again.

Searching

Type a genus, scientific name or common name into the search box and click Search. Searching for a genus, such as “Amanita”, shows all its species.

Advanced Search

Open Advanced Search to filter by features such as cap colour, cap shape, gill colour or spore colour. See Using Advanced Filters.

Opening a Species Page

Click any card to open the full species page. See Understanding Species Pages.

Using the Database for Identification

  • Narrow things down with Advanced Search.
  • Compare your photos with the species photos and with confirmed observations.
  • Check the season, habitat and features in the species details.

Species Not in the Database?

Try other spellings, older names or the genus. If it’s genuinely missing, you can add it when you record your observation. See Submitting a New Species.
