Suillus collinitus is a pine bolete, with no English name of its own, that is easily passed over as the commoner Weeping Bolete (Suillus granulatus). Its orange-brown to reddish-brown cap is slimy when wet and streaked with fine, darker fibres, and the small pores are pale yellow to greenish-yellow. The yellow stem has no ring and is covered in small glandular dots, especially near the top.
The clincher is at the base. Dig one up carefully and you will see that the bottom of the stem and the threads of mycelium are pink. It grows with two-needled pines such as Scots Pine, often on dry or sandy soils, from August into November.
The Weeping Bolete has white mycelium and weeps milky droplets from its young pores, and Slippery Jack (Suillus luteus) has a large ring. It is edible but poorly rated. It is probably under-recorded, so it is well worth recording.
