The Yellow Bolete (Neoboletus praestigiator) is a chunky bolete with a reddish-brown, velvety cap and pores that range from scarlet and orange to yellow. Its stout yellow stem is covered in coarse red to orange flecks, and the flesh is bright yellow. Like its close relatives, it turns blue very quickly when cut or bruised. It grows with both broadleaf and conifer trees and has a long season, from late spring into early winter.
This group of red-pored boletes has been renamed several times, and older books may list similar fungi as Boletus erythropus or Boletus luridiformis. The Lurid Bolete (Suillellus luridus) has a red net on the stem rather than flecks, and the Devil's Bolete (Rubroboletus satanas) has a pale cap. Red-pored boletes should only be eaten on expert identification.
