The Girdled Webcap (Cortinarius trivialis) is a slimy brown webcap of damp woodland, named for the bands that ring its stem. The orange-brown to reddish-brown cap is coated in thick slime when wet, and the young gills are hidden behind a cobweb-like veil, the cortina, which leaves a rusty ring-zone as the cap opens. Below it, the stem is wrapped in several yellowish-brown girdles of veil, the feature that gives it its name.

It grows with birch, willow, poplar, oak and beech in wet and boggy woodland from summer into early winter. The Blue-girdled Webcap (Cortinarius collinitus) is very similar and often needs a closer look to separate. Webcaps include some of Britain's most dangerous fungi, such as the Deadly Webcap (Cortinarius rubellus), so no webcap should ever be eaten.
